A few minutes ago, activists from the Civil Society including environmentalists started a protest near “Mother Theresa” square in Tirana, in order to protect the Vjosa river.

As is clear in the photos secured by Euronews Albania, the center of the square writes “Vjosa National Park Now”.

President Ilir Meta is also expected to join this protest at 12:00 p.m.

In the recent months, president Meta has joined environmental activists by demanding the government to declare the entire area of the Vjosa river a national park.

The Vjosa river, which flows from the Mountains of Pindi in Greece and runs all the way to the Adriatic Sea, is currently under the threat of several projects for hydro power plants, one of which in Kalivac, which was adjourned several months ago by PM Rama.

A famous American actor, Leonardo DiCaprio has also raised his voice in the name of protecting the Vjosa river calling it an environmental cause worth fighting for.
